Apple’s bought camera sensors from Sony before, and this year we’re going to see a new, 13-megapixel sensor that takes up less room without compromising image quality.

An Apple patent, uncovered by Apple Insider in May 2013, shows a system where an iPhone can remotely control other illuminating devices – extra flashes. It would work in a similar manner to that seen in professional photography studios. Interesting stuff.

For the iPhone 5S Apple upped the physical size of its 8-megapixel sensor, meaning that each pixel gets more light. In addition, it upgraded the lens from an f/2.4 model to an f/2.2 model, increasing low-light performance again. Combined with the A7 SoC, the camera has a couple of neat modes, including a 10fps burst mode that goes on until the phone’s memory is full, and a 120fps slow-motion mode.

It would make sense if Apple was to use this sensor in the iPhone 6, although, given it’s a bigger phone, with more room inside for components, it could well up the pixel count, with a 12- or 13-megapixel on the cards.

With the news that LTE and 3G maybe allowed to work above 3,000 meters (10,000ft) as well as using your device during take off and landing on European Flights, we feel a little disappointed, and we will explain.

Flying was maybe the only place you could not get a signal for an extended amount of time, quiet time if you will, during which you could use the time to keep your thoughts to yourself. Talk to the person next to you before realising that they are actually very annoying, listen to music, watch films - sleep, read a book, you know that kind of thing. 

By contrast train travel brings some horrendous experiences with regard to mobile phones. Nobody talks to each other these days - especially on commuter trains which are dead quiet, only for the silence to be broken 100s of times over by someone shouting in to the handset one of two things. 

"Yes hello darling Ill be home on 20 mins, Im two stops away" - 

Maybe the most over heard telephone call of all time. When the train is on time and the commuter obviously uses this service daily, would there actually be any need for that call ? No there isnt. Second most regular thing, 

"Hello, Hello Hello.......Hello, I cant hear you, hello. Ill call you back can you hear me.........shit " repeat to fade.

Now with that in mind, doesnt that make flying just that bit more pleasurable !? Throw into the mix you can charge your phone on most flights now, we could be looking at a horrible situation where our fellow passengers could be barking orders at some poor soul thousands of miles away while the rest of us have to listen to that dross for hours on end, maybe there will be no end.

How would this change first class travel ? Where the more affluent or higher paid business people sit regularly and enjoy the quiet. I cant imagine a spreadsheet error going down well while Im trying to sleep on a £2,000 seat while Gordon Gekko is trying to resolve said situation.

Thankfully this isnt possible on transatlantic flights, so there is a saving grace of not having to listen to Gordon on any flight to JFK anytime soon. 

Sometimes change is good, although this is purely about generating more cash to the airlines in some shape of form, and of course the mobile phone carriers. Customer experience for those of us that like to fly quietly, will be degraded.

"Would you like LTE enabled for European flights sir / madam ?! Sure thats £50 extra a month please." - Said a mobile operator in the not so distant future.

Lets hope the cost is prohibitive to the general public, or there could be riots in the air.

The hardware side of the RoadWarrior package is a 10.6 ounce, 600 pixel per inch scanner that measures just 1.5 by 11.4 by 2 inches (HWD). Thats wide enough to scan letter and legal size paper but small enough to pack in your notebook bag, inside its own soft carrying case. Like most portable scanners, it gets power over a USB cable, so once youve installed the software, setting it up is literally as easy as plugging in the cable.

Some of the bundled programs are clearly handy for a business user on the go. NewSoft Presto! BizCard 5 lets you scan and store business cards in your contact list almost as quickly as you collect them and it does a reasonably good job of both recognizing the text on business cards and putting it in the right fields. Even better, you can add any notes you like, while the reason you took the card is still fresh in your mind.

Similarly, Google Earth will let you get a map, directions, and nearby points of interest while traveling (assuming you have an Internet connection). Other programs in the mix arent obviously tied to travel needs. The list includes Nuances ScanSoft PaperPort 11 Standard for document management Nuances ScanSoft OmniPage 14 for optical character recognition (OCR) Google Desktop for indexing and searching for files on your hard drive and OmniPage Indexer (or, more precisely, a link for downloading OmniPage Indexer).

Which works with OmniPage to recognize text in image files and add that text to the Google Desktop index the result being that you can use Google Desktop to find a particular image file by searching for text in the file. The key word in the phrase above is that these programs arent obviously tied to travel needs.

In fact, one of the RoadWarriors strengths is the way the programs combine to create a less than obvious solution to the perennial issue of tracking expense receipts.

Visioneer sees the RoadWarrior as addressing the same audience as NeatReceipts Scanalizer, which combines a portable scanner similar to the RoadWarrior with a completely different approach to software.

The NeatReceipts software is most notable for including a receipts manager, which is actually a database program. Its designed to scan receipts, recognize the text, and insert the text in the database. You can then use the data to generate expense reports and tax forms, as well as export the data to a file format that your accounting program can import. The primary attraction of NeatReceipts is that, in theory at least, it lets you throw out your paper receipts and manage your expenses on your computer.

To take full advantage of it, however, you need to know things like how to use your word processors mail merge feature to process data from NeatReceipts to create an expense report in the format your accounting department wants. Though RoadWarrior takes a completely different approach, its purpose is the same to free the traveler from having to track a blizzard of paper.

With RoadWarrior, you manage your scanned receipts with a combination of PaperPort, OmniPage Indexer, and Google Desktop. Scan the receipts into PaperPort and you can combine related receipts into PaperPort stacks. You can also recognize the text with PaperPort or OmniPage Indexer and then use Google Desktop to search for individual receipts or groups of receipts as needed.

First of all, it has an awesome camera. Recorded HD (1280 by 720) and VGA videos were sharp, super smooth, and well lit only the flat colors and slightly pixelated look gave away the tiny cell phone lens. Photos taken with the 5 megapixel still mode looked very sharp outdoors, with plenty of detail in bricks, grass, and tree leaves. There was quite a bit of noise in darker rooms indoors, but shots were acceptably sharp and detailed with enough light.

Shutter speeds were about one second even with auto focus, and the phone recovered almost instantly after every shot. To play back HD video (either recorded or sideloaded), you have to attach a US$29.99 HDMI cable, sold separately. When do you want converted a few 720p movie trailers to MP4, sideloaded them to the microSD card, and hooked up the Instinct HD to a 42 inch plasma HDTV. The video even played simultaneously on the Instinct HDs screen. (The TV only shows video output, incidentally not UI graphics.)

Other media features here are flexible, but inconvenient and buggy at times. You need to pull off the stiff battery cover and remove the battery to replace the memory card. My 16GB SanDisk microSD card worked fine, and Sprint tosses a 4GB card in the box. The phone has a standard size 3.5 mm headphone jack. AAC, WMA, and MP3 music tracks sounded clear over Motorola S9-HD Bluetooth headphones. The music player displayed album art when available.

Various Sprint themed services like NFL Mobile Live and NASCAR come as part of Sprints Everything plan, and you can buy music tracks over the air from Sprints music store. I ran into several glitches playing music and video. The volume inexplicably started deafeningly loud on every track for the first quarter second, and the unit hard reset itself in the middle of an MP3 track.

Popping the battery and microSD card reset it. The video player oddly forced me into the TV app when it was done, even though I hadnt been using Sprint TV. The Instinct HD has the right hardware for gaming with its large touch screen and accelerometer. But it wouldnt run any of our Java benchmarks, and the one preloaded game demo ran poorly. It appears all that CPU horsepower is geared toward HD video.
